The hail began as dime size, and gradually grew to the size of quarters. Several of the larger stones were as large as half-dollars, and that occurred as 50-60 mph downdraft winds blew in from the north. The hail fell continuously and was deafening as the rain got very heavy. In fact, I received 1.34 inches in 15-20 minutes. All of the trees were stripped of their leaves, and debris fell all over the house and outdoor objects. The hail accumulated up to a few inches in the exposed areas, and was enough to stop up 2 sewage drains in front of my home such that rapidly flooding began to back up to near the front door/garage of a neighbor's home, and halfway up my driveway. This flooding was very similar to the May 13th, 2008 flash flooding I observed when 5-6 inches fell in 2-3 hours, and was 1.5-2 feet deep during both events. Only 1 1/4 miles west of my home, I was provided a picture via Facebook of a hail drift that was 14 inches deep! The hail remained on the ground through at least 10 pm Saturday evening (the 30th), more than 7 hours after the hailstorm! I have lived in Shreveport for most of my life and have never seen anything like this! |
