I do not have a hail pad (Hail is extremely rare here, occurring only once in several years). On mossy area, hailstones averaged ca. 2" apart. The storm that produced the hail was one of several local thunderstorms on this date. Thunder advanced slowly from NW at 5:27 PM. Getting darker, th overhead, rain splotches on road by 5:44. Lt NW wind up, lt rain at 5:47. Mod/heavy rain, occasional th at 5:51. Heavy rain, lt wind at 5:54. Lt rain, th moving off by 5:58. Rain stopped, 0.28" in gauge, scattered hail on ground (probably from period of heavy rain) at 6:00. From measurements, 75% of stones ~0.4" diameter spheres; 25% 'flying-saucer-shaped' disks ~0.6" diameter with upper and lower 'domes' as from entrained spherical stone. Within each of the two classes, size dispersion was 20 - 30%. From 5:47 to 6:01, temperature dropped from 87 to 73 degrees. |
