Hail fell from a supercell thunderstorm that mostly passed just to the south. Very little rainfall, and the rainfall that did occur fell with smaller hail after the larger hail. While multiple large hail stones fell, most were very soft. Hail stones bounced or shattered. Hail stones that hit the roof or the vehicles broke into smaller pieces and left no noticeable damage.
One attached photo shows some of the largest collected stones with a ruler for comparison. One stone fell apart right before the photo was taken and broke into 3 large pieces. The largest remaining piece had a maximum diameter of about 4 inches. Another hail stone was about 3.25 inches in diameter, and two other stones were approximately 2.5 inches in diameter.
Overall, the amount of hail damage was surprisingly light in our area compared to the size of hail observed. |
